Does a modem determine how fast my internet is or is it the router?

I have an apple airport express, i know this is the wireless router. the phone line is connected to the modem then the modem connects to the apple express. The modem is the one that my internet provider gave me and its just a small weak looking modem. So is the modem the one that determines the speed of my internet or is it the router? And if i buy a new modem will my internet get faster?

Make your ISP give you another Modem. I have Time Warner and have taken mine to there office and traded it 3 times now. Each time it made a world of difference! This last one is very small, about 5 by 6 by 1 inch and it cranks! I just checked and my download speed is 28,327kbps! http://www.speedtest.net/

It’s your ISP actually. They have control over the line speed on the DSLAM at the CO. Replacing your hardware is not likely to alter your Internet speed much if at all.

The slowest link in the chain determiones your speed. UNless you have one heck of a connection it’ll be the guys at mission control over at your ISP who are determining your bandwidth.

Internet speed (bandwidth) is determined by your Internet Package.
